Humility, meaning openness to recognizing and accepting one’s own weaknesses and strengths, gives us the courage to confront difficult truths and become vulnerable. It may involve overcoming shame and feelings of inferiority, or overcoming pride and feelings of superiority. Sometimes we struggle with feelings of inferiority and superiority at the same time. Becoming vulnerable means leaving behind destructive, defensive behaviors and focusing on learning and growing. Humility opens our hearts and minds to forgiveness and a productive, compassionate, healthy path forward.
